Nomenclature of the variables

The names of the variables are composed of different abbreviations which are connected by underline characters. The abbreviations are deduced from the English language. To specify a variable, abbreviations (in capital letters) concerning the most important information are ordered as follows:

  • Module (only for validation, costs and river loads)
  • Emission pathway or kind of variable;
  • Parameter, factor or ratio;
  • Environmental compartment, ratio or calculation approach;
  • Source and
  • Substance group or substance

Detailed specifications for the abbreviations are made in lower case letters after the main abbreviation.

Step 1

The first abbreviation in the variable name (step 1) indicates the module which uses the variable. However, it is left out if the variable belongs to a substance emission module, which is why this position is left blank in most cases.

Step 2

The following abbreviation (or the first, in case of the substance emission module) represents the category of data or emission pathway (step 2).

Step 3

After defining the input data or emission pathways, step 3 specifies the variable more precisely using components, parameters, factors or ratios. Explanations for these abbreviations are given in the following table:

For ratios, the specification is either composed of the parameter (lower case letters) and the name of the two measured values (see “RATIO”) or composed of the parameter (lower case letters), part size (numerator) and total size (denominator) (see “SHR”).

Step 4

In step 4, additional information on type of discharge, environmental compartments, treatment or calculation approach is specified. If the environmental compartment corresponds to the calculation approach or if no environmental compartment can be assigned, the abbreviation is omitted. In most cases, the land use corresponds to the respective areas. If this specification is followed by a concentration however, the discharge from the corresponding environmental compartment is intended.

Nomenclature of calculation steps, algorithms and algorithm stacks

Calculation steps carry the algorithm's name and are only distinguished by their number.

Algorithms, on the other hand, have distinct names, which are composed as follows:

Component > assigned algorithm stack > name of the algorithm

Example:

Emissions > emissions via erosion > enrichment factor

For algorithm stacks, the following rule is valid:

Component > specification

Examples:

Areas > total areas
water balance > total runoff
Emissions > heavy metal emissions via groundwater

Since variants of calculation steps, algorithm and algorithm stacks can be created, the respective variant (or project name) is specified in brackets.

Examples:

algorithm water balance > urban runoff > runoff from combined sewer overflows (variant 1)
algorithm stack water balance > runoff, total (variant 1)
algorithm water balance > urban runoff > runoff from combined sewer overflows (variant 2)
algorithm stack water balance > runoff, total (variant 3, measure efficiency)
